Reclaiming Our Relationship with Clothing — Rooted in Nature

In The Independent’s IndyBest feature “Rooted in style: How nature is rewilding our relationship with fashion,” the editorial team explores how reconnecting with the natural world is quietly transforming fashion—steering it toward care, craft, and community.

At the heart of the feature is design activist Kate Fletcher, credited with pioneering “nature-based design.” She explains how time spent in nature isn’t just restorative—it reshapes how we dress, consume, and connect. Whether it’s mending, growing fibre, or knitting together, our garments become meaningful threads in a web of ecological care.

The article also highlights our very own Dr Georgina Gould, Clinical Lead at Dose of Nature, who observes that being in nature, slowing down, and noticing can help us reflect and “access our true selves”.

“We stop being who the screen wants us to be and instead find who we are. That’s when real change happens – to our habits, our desires, and our sense of enough.” Dr Gould.

This piece reminds us that fashion can be an act of gratitude and accountability—an invitation to honour the stories woven into our clothes, from field to fibre to finished garment.
