Do Nature Prescriptions Work? LSE Report Reveals Huge Mental Health Impact.
A landmark study by the London School of Economics has demonstrated the efficacy of Dose of Nature Prescriptions. The Report demonstrates what many of us feel instinctively; that structured time in nature is one of the most powerful, scientifically proven ways to heal and protect our mental health.
The London School of Economics (LSE) recently published their Impact Evaluation Report on the Dose of Nature Prescription, finding "substantial improvements in participants’ mental health, wellbeing, and pro-environmental behaviours”.
The evaluation consists of a rigorous impact assessment based on a pairwise waitlist-based randomised control trial, spanning 2.5 years and involving 375+ participants. Results indicate that the programme:
- Produced marked reductions in anxiety and depression, using NHS recognised scales
- Significantly increased life satisfaction and perceived worthwhileness of daily activities
- Reliably increased both private and public pro-environmental behaviours
- Enhanced social connectedness and sense of belonging while decreasing feelings of loneliness.
LSE also conducted a social welfare analysis, in line with HM Treasury Green Book Guidance. They calculated a benefit-cost ratio of 8.3, meaning that the benefits of a Dose of Nature Prescription are more than eight times greater than its costs. They noted that this suggested "a high value for money”.
The report concluded:
“The Dose of Nature innovative nature prescription programme delivers on its primary aims to treat mental ill-being while also yielding a host of additional benefits for both the individual participants and for society more broadly.”
This incredible data ultimately highlights, and evidences what we already knew to be true: that increased intentional engagement with nature profoundly improves our mental health and wellbeing.
